The Pleasures of Indoor Gardening - Thomas Landscapes

homesgardens gardenspot The Pleasures of Indoor Gardening A Great Way to Pass a Gray February Day article and photos by Derek Thomas dening, they have not had success with indoor plants. Well, indoor gardening is easy and fun. T he artic air this winter has been persistent. Even the toughest gardeners have hung up their trowels. At the onset of February, although the shortest month, avid gardeners like myself will all agree time seems to crawl and the final day of this gray and cold month never quickly comes. For me, February’s impact is softened by time spent with indoor plants. In tending my houseplants, there is always something going on to keep my spirits up: my violets are in bloom while the snow and ice falls against their sunny windowsill; my Meyer lemon has fruit ripening right after the holidays; or my Phalaenopsis orchid spikes and blooms in spite of the frigid scene outside. If it were not for these gems of inspiration, these great indoor garden friends, my winters would most likely be best spent far away from the gray February beast.

How To Make A Straight Line Fit Using Excel

Let's consider the following example: One has measured the force necessary to extend a spring from its rest (equilibrium position) for various extensions. The goal is to find the spring constant. The theory (Hook's Law) predicts the linear dependence between the force and the change of the length of the spring: F = -kx To find the spring constant k, one needs to plot the negative force -F as a function of x and find the straight-line fit. The slope of that line is equal to the spring constant k. Finding the best straight-line fit could be quite time consuming if done with a calculator. Using Microsoft Excel program significantly simplifies the whole procedure. Follow the steps shown below to make a graph and then draw a straight line that fits your data. A. Start Microsoft Excel 2010 (or Excel 2007). B. Enter your data into Excel spreadsheet. C. Highlight all cells containing data. In our example, the first column (A) contains values of x, whereas the second column (B) contains values of force -F: D. From the "Insert" tab select "Charts - Scatter". Use the first type of scatter charts – “Scatter with only Markers”. You should see a simple plot prepared by Excel. E. Next step is to add axis labels and legend to the graph. Select “Layout” tab from “Chart Tools”. Then add a header using the “Chart Title” button and add axis labels using “Axis Titles” button (both for horizontal and for vertical axes). Optionally, you may edit or simply remove the legend. Grab and drag a corner of the graph (chart) to enlarge its size. F. The last step is to add the linear fit (a straight line fit) to your graph (chart). Click once anywhere inside the graph area. Select the “Layout” tab from “Chart Tools”. Click on the “Trendline” icon and select the “Linear Trendline” option. You should see a graph similar to this: ...

USB Keypad Reference Design - Microchip

Most computer users are familiar with the numeric keypad section on a computer keyboard. The numeric keypad is generally used to enter long sequences of numbers, or while working with applications such as calculator, spreadsheet and accounting programs. However, most laptop manufacturers do not provide a numeric keypad section on their keyboard due to space constraint. The Microchip USB keypad demo is an easy plug-andplay USB keypad which can be plugged into a computer or a USB host to make the numeric keypad available. The USB keypad is designed using the PIC16F1459 device, which is part of Microchip’s 8-bit USB-capable family, PIC16F14XX. DEMONSTRATION HIGHLIGHTS All the USB keypad features are driven by a single device, PIC16F1459. The following list describes the USB keypad features: • Crystal-free USB operation • 18 touch buttons using Microchip’s Capacitive Voltage Divider (CVD) technique • LED backlight with proximity sensing ON and auto power OFF • Audio feedback using piezo buzzer • USB Human Interface Device (HID) interface • Plug-and-play • Low-cost light weight design Figure 1 illustrates the USB keypad. FIGURE 1: USB KEYPAD This application note describes the USB Keypad Reference Design. The PCB layout for the capacitive touch sensors arranged in a matrix is also provided.
