Evaluating irrigation scheduling of hydroponic tomato in Navarra ...

The correct supply of water and nutrients is important in hydroponic growing systems in order to use water efficiently, avoid stress situations, and control production. The present study was conducted to evaluate two irrigation scheduling techniques for hydroponic tomato production in Navarra, northern Spain, related to the crop water requirements. The results show that although daily over-irrigation was applied (45.7% of drainage), 18% of the total yield (35 kg m−2 ) was affected by blossom-end rot problems, due to water stress suffered by the crop. Irrigation scheduling by time clock was not flexible enough to satisfy the varying crop water requirements through the day and during the season. With constant irrigation intervals and volumes, water and fertilisers were wasted during the morning (excessive irrigation) whereas during the afternoon, the plants suffered water stress. Irrigation scheduling by radiation method at a level of 0.81 MJ m−2 , with some supplementary time clock irrigation applications during the hours of darkness (in order to keep the growing medium wet), appeared to be a good solution. As mobile communication devices are gaining more and more functionalities, people still want to have the option of listening to FM radio on their smart phones or MP3 players. This can only be achieved through the miniaturization of the FM reception process by implementing all its functions into a microchip. This miniaturization process is widely used in the industry, but has not been explored in depth by undergraduate students. In order to appreciate the complexity of such a task, we decided to design an FM receiver in a microchip. To make the project more interesting, we chose to create a user interface facilitating its use.

The design of FM receivers for broadcast reception are generally low-cost single conversion designs. The system comprises the front end, the IF amplifier plus limiter, and the detection stage. The latter two are nowadays almost always part of an integrated circuit to reduce costs. Until about the early 1990s the FM front end has always been constructed using two transistors. In a bid to further reduce costs and make the design simpler to manufacture, various manufacturers had begun to offer integrated circuits that provide a complete FM front end with just the addition of external tuned circuits. From about the mid 1990s and to the present day, semiconductor vendors have offered even greater integration, with a complete FM-AM receiver in a single chip, including a 1-watt audio amplifier, requiring minimal external circuitry. However the complete end-to-end analog design is meeting its end, as everything is moving to digital broadcasting. Design of Integrated, Low Power, Radio Receivers in ... - Virginia Tech

Despite increasing levels of integration in modern electronic products, radio receiver designs continue to rely on discrete LC, ceramic, and electro-acoustic devices for the realization of RF and IF bandpass filtering. Although considerable research has been directed at developing suitable switched-capacitor and Gm-C based replacements for these filters, the resulting designs have yet to see substantial commercial application. A critical problem faced by existing active filter implementations is found to be the power consumption required to simultaneously achieve narrow fractional bandwidths and acceptable dynamic range. This power consumption, which can reach several hundred milliwatts, is incompatible with portable wireless product design. Additional problems include the complexity of tuning control circuits required to achieve small fractional bandwidths, and difficulties in extending filter designs to higher frequencies. These problems are examined in depth, and performace bounds and new implementation techniques are considered. A detailed study of active filters reveals that their dynamic range limitations are fundamentally the result of regenerative gain associated with the realization of high-Q poles. Thus, some form of energy storage and exchange mechanism is shown to be required to decrease the regeneration needed. This leads to an investigation of on-chip LC filtering. It ...
