Many of these chemical compounds, which are released into our air through a process called “offgassing,” come from everyday items present in our homes and offices. To be a successful indoor gardener, you need to understand how the interior environment affects plant growth and how cultivation differs from growing plants outdoors. Fact Sheet 9/11 Memorial The National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center will memorialize the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, a national tragedy that changed the course of history. Visitors will be able to learn, remember and pay tribute to those who lost their lives in New York, N.Y.; Shanksville, P.A.; and Washington, D.C., as well as the World Trade Center bombing in 1993. “Reflecting Absence,” the Memorial, consists of two massive voids sized over the footprints of the original Twin Towers with waterfalls cascading down their sides. The names of those who perished as a result of the attacks are inscribed around the edges of the Memorial waterfalls. The Memorial Plaza serves as a contemplative space amid the cacophony of sights and sounds of Lower Manhattan. A state-of-the-art museum, featuring interactive exhibitions, artifacts, memorabilia, a resource center, and areas for reflection will complement the Memorial. Monthly Highlights The Plaza is now open to the public daily. Visitors use kiosks with interactive displays to direct them to the names on the bronze parapets. Concrete work continues in the remaining northeast quadrant of the plaza as work progresses in the Pavilion and the below-grade Museum. construction progress Project particulars • Steel erection commenced on September 2, 2008, with the erection of a 7,700 pound column located near the footprint of the original World Trade Center’s North Tower. • A 65-foot-high by 62-foot wide piece of the original foundation wall, or slurry wall, is being preserved to allow visitors of the Memorial Museum to view it. A reinforcing wall was built behind this section to ensure the slurry wall’s integrity. • A total of 65,000 cubic yards of concrete, coupled with 8,658 tons of steel, are being used to build the Memorial. • The design for the Memorial was conceived by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. More than 5,200 entrants from 63 nations completed in the Memorial Design Competition. Pavilion The Pavilion electrical contractor is pulling lines to feed power to equipment on the 3rd floor while maintaining temporary light and power during work hours. The miscellaneous metals contractor is installing miscellaneous steel throughout the site. The concrete contractor will be stripping formwork on the roof and the 3rd floor. Memorial Museum The plumbing contractor is working on punch list items while maintaining temporary water. In addition, the carpenter is installing sheetrock around the pick hole with the use of a lift on elevation 242' as well as plastering sheetrock walls around the South Footprint. The electrical contractor is maintaining temporary light and power. Johnson Controls will be working on start-up equipment in the north and south mechanical rooms at elevation 284' and elevation 264', respectively. Five Star is working on IT at the Telecom Main Distribution Frame (MDF), and working on fire alarm systems throughout the site. The contractor is installing light fixtures on the catwalk above the west chamber ceiling. The concrete contractor is installing formwork and rebar at elevation 284' by the Grand Staircase.

1. Crops can be produced on non-arable land (not fit for farming). Ex. Land with poor soils, and contamination (i.e., high heavy metal and salinity levels). *The grower doesn’t have to have good soil since the systems, bags, etc. are placed on top of the ground. 2. Isolation from diseases or insect pests usually found in the soil. *The plant roots are contained in systems, bags, etc. and do not grow through soil that might contain diseases or other pests such as insects and nematodes. *Additionally, white fabric ground covers can be placed on the greenhouse floor to further isolate the systems and plants from soil-borne pests. NOTE: The white fabric also reflects light back up into the canopy enhancing photosynthesis, allows for ease of cleaning and helps control humidity and weeds. 3. Direct and immediate control over the rhizosphere. *Since the roots are either growing in water or growing through an inert medium, whatever is in the nutrient solution is bathing the roots. Therefore, nutrient concentrations and pH can be adjusted quickly. 4. High planting densities are possible which minimizes use of land area. *For field tomatoes a typical planting density is 4000 to 5000 plants per acre. Greenhouse hydroponic tomatoes can be 10,000 to 11,000 plants per acre! *Plants can be grown closer together because of the use of indeterminant (“vining”) varieties that take up less area than do bush varieties usually used for field cropping. Greenhouse tomato production has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. However, of all the greenhouse crops, tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) are the most complicated to grow because they require the most management, the most labor, and the most light. A grower must be committed to meeting the daily demands of production in order to be successful. Prospective growers need to get as much information as they can about all aspects of greenhouse production before beginning this enterprise. Marketing The development of farmers markets, roadside farm markets, and produce auctions across the state offer significant opportunities to sell produce from the farm. Tomatoes can be sold directly from the greenhouse at retail prices. Wholesale markets include supermarkets, restaurants, caterers, and wholesale distributors. Market Outlook The U.S. greenhouse tomato market is increasing dramatically as many consumers will now pay an increased price for a red, ripe tomato. It is possible for Kentucky growers to sell greenhouse tomatoes in this expanding market. Early-season tomato production may also capture higher prices resulting in profitability from intensive production systems. Excellent light, moderate heating costs, high yields, and good prices make spring the best time for greenhouse tomato production in Kentucky. On the other hand, fall and winter production generally results in low returns due to reduced yields and high fuel costs. For this reason, it is difficult to recommend production schedules where tomato harvest would be expected from December through mid February. Production Considerations Production systems There is no single best system for successfully growing greenhouse tomatoes. Many production systems will work if the grower correctly manages fertilization and watering. With experience, individual growers will be able to determine the best and most economic techniques to use in their greenhouse. A number of different types of growing media can be used for greenhouse tomatoes, including good field soil, packaged commercial mixes, and various types of hydroponic media. Use only materials that have been sterilized, pasteurized, or manufactured under clean, disease-free conditions. Small growers often use in-ground soil culture in the beginning, but generally switch to perlite or pinebark culture as they learn more about tomato production. A drip irrigation system is used for the distribution of water and nutrients. Tomatoes require 4 square feet of space per plant. This crop will require attention everyday to ensure success.
