Abstract. Designing a mobile robotic toy is challenging work. The robot must be appealing to children and create interesting interactions while facing the wide variety of situations that can be experienced while playing with a child, and all at a reasonable cost. In this paper we present Roball, a ball-shaped robot that moves by making its external spherical shell rotate. Such design for a mobile robotic toy shows robustness in handling unstructured environments and unconstrained interactions with children. Results show that purposeful movements of the robot, its physical structure and locomotion dynamics generate interesting new games inﬂuenced by the environment and the child. To help children with autism develop social skills, we are investigating the use of mobile robotic toys that can move autonomously in the environment and interact in various manners (vocal messages, music, visual cues, movement, etc.), in a more predictable and less intimidating way. These interactions are designed to build up their self-esteem by reinforcing what they do well. We report tests done with autistic children using different robots, each robot having particular characteristics that allow to create interesting interactions with each child. Autism is characterized by abnormalities in the development of social relationships and communication skills, as well as the presence of marked obsessive and repetitive behavior. Despite several decades of research, relatively little is understood about the causes of autism and there is currently no cure for the condition. However education, care and therapeutic approaches can help people with autism maximize their potential, even though impairments in social and communication skills may persist throughout life. As engineers, we got interested in the idea of designing mobile robotic toys to help children with autism learn to develop appropriate social skills. For an autistic child, a robot may be less intimidating and more predictable than a human. A robot can follow a deterministic play routine and also adapt over time and change the ways it responds to the world, generating more sophisticated interactions and unpredictable situations that can help capture and retain the child’s interest. Robotic toys also have the advantage that they can be programmed to respond differently to situations and events over time. This ﬂexibility allows robotic toys to evolve from simple machines to systems that demonstrate more complex behavior patterns.
Keyboard encoders are a very common application for CPLDs. Typically a processor, ASSP, or ASIC does not have enough pins for keypads or keyboards. I/O expansion is a very common function for CPLDs and allows a processor to decode a very large keyboard with very few I/Os. Even though CPLDs like MAX® and MAX® II may have abundant low-cost I/Os, decoding a keypad or keyboard with one I/O per switch is not desirable. The advantage of decoding a keyboard with fewer wires is that it reduces the number of wires going from a keypad to a main circuit board or it reduces the complexity of a switch matrix in the keyboard assembly. This application note explains how the resources of a MAX II device can be used to decode a very large number of switches in a keypad or keyboard with only two I/Os and a GND pin. The decoding approach used works for as few as 4 switches and as many as 48 switches.
