September 1982 to January 31, 2012 Reports are logged as received, and the current log is printed out as requested. Compiled by the editor of ANIMAL PEOPLE from press accounts since 1982, this table covers only attacks by dogs of clearly identified breed type or ancestry, as designated by animal control officers or others with evident expertise, who have been kept as pets. All accounts are cross-checked by date, location, and identity of the victim. Attacks by police dogs, guard dogs, and dogs trained specifically to fight are also excluded. “Attacks doing bodily harm” includes all fatalities, maimings, and other injuries requiring extensive hospital treatment. “Maimings” includes permanent disfigurement or loss of a limb. Where there is an asterisk (#), please see footnotes. If there are more "attacks" than "victims," it means that there were multiple dogs involved in some attacks. If the numbers of "victims" does not equal the numbers of "deaths" and "maimings," it means that some of the victims -- in attacks in which some people were killed or maimed -- were not killed or maimed. Over the duration of the data collection, the severity of the logged attacks appears to be at approximately the 1-bite-in-10,000 level. The ‘%/dogs” column states the percentage of each breed of dog among 275,716 classified ads listing dogs for sale at web sites during June 2011, screened to eliminate duplicates. Similar data collected in June 2010 did not eliminate duplicate listings, and thereby appears to have over-counted several breeds, including pit bull terriers and pit bull mixes, who were over-counted in 2010 by 20%.
Adjustable Speed Drives As Applied To Centrifugal Pumps Application Solution Foreword This article is a revised edition of the original D-7108 application waste energy, and generally cause the pump to operate at note as written by Dennis P. Connors, John D. Robechek, and reduced efficiencies. Dennis A. Jarc. The overall content and principles of this 1982 publication are still very much valid and relevant today. The significant changes that have occurred since this article was originally published is in AC technology. The dominant method of AC control is by PWM inverters, particularly with the advent of the high speed Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs). This will be the only drives technology to be considered in this revisited analysis. Adjustable speed drives (ASDs) can achieve reduced flow by providing adjustable speed pump operation. This results in reduced system pressure and operation near the pump's Best Efficiency Point (BEP). In addition, maintenance costs might be reduced. This paper will discuss the energy savings potential of AC ASDs followed by a brief description of the operation and relative benefits of PWM AC drives.

Type II diabetic subjects are both insulin-deficient and insulin-resistant. Recent studies suggest that the insulin resistance is due to a combined receptor and postreceptor defect with the postreceptor defect being the predominant lesion. In the present study, we examined the effects of exogenous insulin therapy upon these defects in insulin action in six untreated type II diabetic subjects. Glycemic control and adipocyte insulin binding were measured and in vivo insulin dose-response curves for overall glucose disposal and suppression of hepatic glucose output were constructed before treatment. Following these initial studies, the diabetic subjects were treated with twice-daily injections of regular and NPH purified pork insulin for 14 days and the pretreatment studies repeated. Glycemic control was significantly improved by this treatment regimen. The mean fasting serum glucose level (±SE) fell from 287 ± 20 to 125 ± 13 mg/dl, the mean glycosylated hemoglobin level (± SE) decreased from 14.2 ± 1.1% to 8.3 ± 0.5%, and the mean 24-h urinary glucose excretion (±SE) declined from 65.6 ± 40.3 to 0.6 ± 0 . 1 g/24 h. Adipocyte insulin binding did not change significantly during the treatment period. In contrast, the 14-day period of insulin treatment produced a 72% increase (P < 0.005) in the maximal rate of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, 321 ± 32 mg/M2/min compared with 187 ± 32 mg/M2/min before treatment, indicating that the postreceptor defect in insulin action was significantly ameliorated by insulin treatment. The dose-response curve for insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose output was rightshifted, consistent with the decrease in insulin binding, with no decrease in the maximal effect before treatment and not significantly changed following insulin treatment. In conclusion, the postreceptor defect in insulin-stimulated glucose disposal is largely ameliorated by exogenous insulin treatment, suggesting that this defect in insulin action is an acquired abnormality which is secondary to some aspect of the insulin-deficient state, DIABETES CARE 5.- 353-363, JULY- AUGUST 1982.
