Total Lipid, Triglyceride and Cholesterol Contents in  Oecophylla Smaragdina, Fabricius Consumed in

Edible insects are important dietary component that consumed as food in many developing countries. The edible insects are the rich sources of high quality proteins, fat, vitamins and minerals. Different species of edible insects contribute to variation in nutritional value which depends on the host plant, season and geographic location. The present study was aimed to assess the amount of lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride of Oecophylla smaragdina, Fabricius (the weaver ant) in different developmental stages, castes and in different seasons of the year collected from Upper Assam, North East India. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed among all the groups and between same caste of queen and worker. The total lipid content in this particular species Oecophylla smaragdina of present study was from10-25% in queen larva, 10-23% in queen pupa and 10- 20% in queen adult in different seasons of the year.

Association between polymorphism in APOC3, and  Metabolic Syndrome in the Moroccan Population

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is regarded as a real public health problem its prevalence rises each year as well as its morbidity. It is a multi factorial disease and besides environmental factors and genetic factors also contribute to the pathogenesis of MS. In several studies the SstI (3238C> G) polymorphism of APOC3 gene is associated with increased plasma concentrations of triglyceride (TG) and hypertriglyceridemia. The aim of the present study was to determine the association between polymorphism 3238C> G in APOC3, and Metabolic Syndrome in the Moroccan Population. Statistical analysis has revealed an association of polymorphism APOC3 3238C>G susceptibility with the metabolic syndrome in two models, codominant 1 [OR = 4.21 [1.66-10.68], p = 0.0008] and dominant [OR = 3.83 [1.59-9.19] p = 0.0010]. The variant APOC3 3238G were associated with elevated TG levels (P = 0.0146) and LDL-C (p = 0.0068) compared to patients with MS and controls non-carriers of this variant.

Cardiometabolic syndrome is one of the major public health issues of this century which describes a cluster of clinical characteristics. Seventy two patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiometabolic syndrome and forty healthy age and sex matched normal controls were selected for this study. Detailed clinical epidemiological and anthropometric characteristics were noted. Lipid profile and Cytokinesis-block micronuclei (CBMN) assay using cytochalasin B were carried out in all the subjects. Serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol was significantly higher and HDL cholesterol was significantly lower in patients compared to their normal counter-parts (P<0.05). CBMN frequency of the patients was significantly higher at all ages compared to their normal counter parts (P<0.05). Various risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, smoking and alcoholism were found influenced the CBMN frequency; but the changes were not significant. From this study it can be concluded that DNA damage was found to be higher in patients with cardiometabolic syndrome which may be attributed to the generation of free radicals associated with alcohol consumption, tobacco use, dyslipidemia and glucose intolerance and the accumulation of free radicals with increase in age.

Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body produces insulin but does not use it properly. Insulin,a hormone made by the pancreas, helps the body use glucose for energy. Glucose is a form of sugar that is the body’s main source of energy (fuel). The body’s digestive system breaks food down into glucose, which then travels in the bloodstream to cells throughout the body. Glucose in the blood is called blood glucose, also known as blood sugar. As the blood glucose level rises after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin to help cells take in and use the glucose. When people are insulin resistant, their muscle, fat, and liver cells do not respond properly to insulin. As a result, their bodies need more insulin to help glucose enter cells. The pancreas tries to keep up with this increased demand for insulin by producing more. Eventually, the pancreas fails to keep up with the body’s need for insulin.
