Study shows stem cell therapy using a patient's own bone marrow ...

TIME study mirrors Late TIME trial in confirming autologous stem cells obtained from bone marrow are safe but do not further improve the recovery of heart function following a heart attack MINNEAPOLIS, MN – November 6, 2012 – Administering autologous stem cells obtained from bone marrow either 3 or 7 days following a heart attack did not improve heart function six months later, reports a new clinical trial supported by the National Institutes of Health. The results of this trial, called TIME (Transplantation In Myocardial Infarction Evaluation), were presented by Jay Traverse, MD of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the 2012 Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association in Los Angeles. The results of this trial mirror a previous, related study (LateTIME) which found that autologous bone marrow stem cell therapy given 2-3 weeks after a heart attack did not improve cardiac recovery. Both TIME and LateTIME were carried out by the Cardiovascular Cell Therapy Research Network (CCTRN), sponsored by the NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. “The data presented by TIME do much to advance stem cell therapy research,” said Jay Traverse, MD of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation and Principal Investigator of this study. “While this study did not provide a demonstrated cardiac benefit after six months, we still learned a great deal. Together, TIME and Late TIME have shown that stem cell therapy is safe, and they have set a baseline in terms of quantity of stem cells, type of stem cells, and severity of heart attack.” TIME enrolled 120 volunteers (avg. age 57) between July 2008 and February 2011; the participants all had moderate to severe impairment in their left ventricle and had undergone coronary stent placement as treatment for the heart attack. The participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: day 3 stem cell, day 3 placebo (inactive cells), day 7 stem cell, or day 7 placebo. The CCTRN researchers developed a method of processing and purifying the stem cells from the bone marrow of each volunteer to ensure everyone received a uniform dose (150 million stem cells)...

The Global Climate Change Initiative - Federation of American ...

The United States supports international financial assistance for global climate change initiatives in developing countries. Under the Obama Administration, this assistance has been articulated primarily as the Global Climate Change Initiative (GCCI), a platform within the President’s 2010 Policy Directive on Global Development. The GCCI aims to integrate climate change considerations into U.S. foreign assistance through a range of bilateral, multilateral, and private sector mechanisms to promote sustainable and climate-resilient societies, foster low-carbon growth, and reduce emissions from deforestation and land degradation. The GCCI is implemented through programs at three “core” agencies: the Department of State, the Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Most GCCI activities at USAID are implemented through the agency’s bilateral development assistance programs. Many of the GCCI activities at the Department of State and the Department of the Treasury are implemented through international organizations, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Least Developed Country Fund and Special Climate Change Fund, as well as multilateral financial institutions such as the Global Environment Facility, the Clean Technology Fund, and the Strategic Climate Fund. The GCCI is funded through the Administration’s Executive Budget, Function 150 account, for State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs. Congress is responsible for several activities in regard to the GCCI, including (1) authorizing periodic appropriations for federal agency programs and multilateral fund contributions, (2) enacting those appropriations, (3) providing guidance to the agencies, and (4) overseeing U.S. interests in the programs and the multilateral funds. Recent budget authority for the GCCI was $323 million in FY2009, $945 million in FY2010, $819 million in FY2011, and $858 million in FY2012, and has been enacted through legislation including the Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009 (H.R. 1105; P.L. 111-8); the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R. 3288; P.L. 111117); the Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2010 (H.R. 4899; P.L. 111-212); the Department of Defense and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011 (H.R. 1473; P.L. 112-10); and the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2012 (H.R. 2055; P.L. 112-74). How hydroponic tomatoes are grown in Kansas Diversification is the ...

www.FarmProgress.com – June 2011 39 Kansas Farmer Business Watch Diversification is the future at Taylors’ 4-Star Hydroponics LIVING BASIL: Jarrod Taylor looks over the latest product at 4-Star Hydroponics: living basil. The company is growing the herb for Kroger, where it will be marketed with the rootball intact. T TRAINING TOMATOES: Lee Taylor walks on stilts down the rows of growing tomatoes to adjust the wires they’re trained to climb. The vines are leaned a few inches forward every few days to encourage new branches to climb. How hydroponic tomatoes are grown in Kansas H YDROPONIC vegetables have been grown in Holland for generations. The plant genetics used at 4-Star Hydroponics in St. John were developed in the Netherlands, and the seeds for the hydroponic family farming operation are imported from Holland. “These plants have been bred to grow well in greenhouse conditions, and to root well in the perlite and nutrient water we grow them in,” Taylor says. Each plant is rooted in a gallon container of perlite; drip irrigation tubes keep the growing medium wet with water that has been enriched with nutrients normally found in fertile soil. He says the plants have also been bred to produce the fruit size and pulp consistency that consumers associate with slicing tomatoes. Generally, he says, tomatoes are considered a fairly easy crop to grow. “They are, in the sense that they survive and are pretty forgiving,” he...

Following are some limited examples of safe practices: 1. DO NOT attempt a product repair if you have any doubts as to your ability to complete the repair in a safe and satisfactory manner. 2. Always Use The Correct Replacement Parts as indicated in the parts documentation. Substitutions may defeat compliance with Safety Standards Set For Home Appliances. 3. Before servicing or moving an appliance: • Remove power cord from the electrical outlet, trip circuit breaker to the OFF position, or remove fuse. 4. Never interfere with the proper operation of any safety device. 5. Use ONLY REPLACEMENT PARTS CATALOGED FOR THIS APPLIANCE. Substitutions may defeat compliance with Safety Standards Set For Home Appliances. 6. GROUNDING: The standard color coding for safety ground wires is GREEN, or GREEN with YELLOW STRIPES. Ground leads are not to be used as current carrying conductors. It is EXTREMELY important that the service technician reestablish all safety grounds prior to completion of service. Failure to do so will create a hazard. 7. Prior to returning the product to service, ensure that: • All electrical connections are correct and secure. • All electrical leads are properly dressed and secured away from sharp edges, high-temperature components, and moving parts. • All non-insulated electrical terminals, connectors, heaters, etc. are adequately spaced away from all metal parts and panels. • All safety grounds (both internal and external) are correctly and securely connected. • All panels are properly and securely reassembled. © 2011 Electrolux Home Products, Inc.
