Description and history of site: It was previously a warehouse structure and a former bakery site. Current and future zoning: The space is currently zoned F (Neighborhood Commercial District). No zoning change is needed. Two from one: Lilker Engineers help transform famed Park Central Hotel and spin off luxurious WestHouse Hotel Exterior view of Park Central Hotel, Seventh Avenue at 55th Street NEW YORK, MAY 20, 2014 —The historic 25-story Park Central Hotel New York, 870 Seventh Ave. between 55th and 56th streets, has seen plenty of renovations in its 86 years but none as inventive as the latest by La Salle Hotel Properties, a real estate investment trust that purchased the property in 2012. La Salle’s multimillion dollar vision successfully transformed the tired, 934-room hotel in the heart of the midtown into two unique modern properties with separate entrances and lobby areas. The stylishly renovated Park Central Hotel is a 761-room hotel and conference center with an authentic New York ambience and large hotel amenities, while the elite WestHouse Hotel, with its entrance at 201 W. 55th St., is an elegant boutique hotel with the sophisticated vibe of an urbane townhouse. The WestHouse was recently named one of six Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Lilker Associates Consulting Engineers were part of the Park Central team from the onset, working with the owners, JBS Project Management, architect and designer Jeffrey Beers International, architect of record Kevin Brown with MLG Architects, and construction manager Turner Construction. Lilker provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design services for the renovation and upgrades of all guest rooms, relocation of the kitchen, and creation of two lobbies from Park Central’s original space. The project was completed in less than two years while the Park Central Hotel remained in full operation.

The September 11 Travel Operation The success of the September 11 plot depended on the ability of the hijackers to obtain visas and pass an immigration and customs inspection in order to enter the United States. It also depended on their ability to remain here undetected while they worked out the operational details of the attack. If they had failed on either count—entering and becoming embedded—the plot could not have been executed. Here we present the facts and circumstances of the hijackers’ travel operation, including their 25 contacts with consular officers and their 43 contacts with immigration and customs authorities. We also discuss the 12 contacts with border authorities by other September 11 conspirators who applied for a visa. The narrative is chronological, retracing the hijackers’ steps from their initial applications for U.S. visas, through their entry into the United States, to their applications for immigration benefits, and up through their acquisition of state identifications that helped them board the planes. Along the way, we note relevant actions by U.S. government authorities to combat terrorism. There were a few lucky breaks for U.S. border authorities in this story. Mostly, though, it is a story of how 19 hijackers easily penetrated U.S. border security. Overview of the hijacker’s visas The 9/11 hijackers submitted 23 visa applications during the course of the plot, and 22 of these applications were approved. The hijackers applied for visas at five U.S. consulates or embassies overseas; two of them were interviewed.

In the first PowerPoint tutorial you learned how to create and save a new presentation (the Screenbeans slide show). You saw a sample slide show (The Tudor Monarchs). You learned how to prepare an outline, you typed text for each slide, added clip art, and set timings. You added an effect to enhance the slide transition, you selected a color scheme, and may have even created a new background effect. You changed the printer settings so that you can print out handouts rather than just individual slides of your shows. For many classrooms and for most K-12 students, what you learned in chapter 9 is just fine; it’s all you need to know. But, if you're ready to take the next step and learn some more advanced skills with PowerPoint, or if you teach computer-savvy students who want more challenging skills to master, this chapter's for you. Most PowerPoint presentations you see in school or at work are what are called linear presentations. That is, each slide is designed to proceed one slide right after another. The first slide transitions to the second, which transitions to the third, and so forth. For many educational tasks, this is fine. But, what if... What if you want your students to create an interactive story, where, for example, younger kids could read on Slide One a story about a dragon, then choose, on Slide Two, any one of three possible places that the dragon could go? By clicking on the word "desert," the show would move to a slide describing what happens to the dragon in the desert. If the student clicks on the word "forest," a different slide sequence appears with another ending. The learner thus participates, not by simply clicking on slide after slide in one, linear direction, but by making choices that affect what slide comes next, thus making the presentation interactive and non-linear.
