This work was aimed at providing preliminary findings that unraveled the promising potential of X. americana for the management of Mycobacterium bovis. The study tried to assess the anti-mycobacterial activity of Ximenia americana using the leave extract after extracting with methanol for 48 hours and the extract subjected to serial solvent partitioning with hexane, chloroform and n-butanol. The various solvent fractions obtained from the partitioning were screened against Mycobacterium bovis and the result showed hexane, chloroform and n-butanol extracts to inhibit the growth of the bacteria with a minimum concentration (MIC) of 3200 µg/ml, 1800 µg/ml and 3500 µg/ml respectively. An attempt to understand the water quality of Michika towns and Environs was carried out under the water quality index (WQI). Physico-chemical parameters of 15 water samples collected from both Hand-dug wells and Boreholes were determined using standard procedures. The values of WQI have been affected by concentration of dissolved Ca++, Fe++, and Cl- in the water samples. The value ranges from 54.89 – 99.02 in the hand dug wells which indicate poor to very poor quality except Ghuzukwi. But all the value range for borehole sources indicates a good status with WQI range of 22.99 – 26.76. The quality of water sampled from well were not suitable for human consumption without proper treatment. Model average representations of each parameter for the area are also presented.
The study was designed to evaluate the anti anemic effect of aqueous extract of Pterocarpus erinaceus stem bark in phenylhydrazine induced anemia in albino rats. The extract was also tested for safety. Acute toxicity studies revealed that values up to 5 g/kg body weight did not produced any visible effect. The dosages 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight fed the rats in this study were quite safe. Anemia was induced by administration of 80 mg/kg body weight of phenylhydrazine to the rats. The anemic rats were treated orally with 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Pterocarpus erinaceus stem bark for fourteen days. Oral administration of 250 mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract to anemic rats significantly increased (P< 0.05) serum level of hematological parameters PCV from 40.15 to 54.15, Hb from 11.95 to 13.60, there were significant improvements in RBC, WBC, Neutrophil, Lymphocytes, Platelets, MCV, MCH, and MCHC of the treated rats when compared to the control.
