NOTE: Depending on the model of truck, the splash guard may be attached to the bottom of the truck with hex bolts and several two-piece plastic push-in clips. Pry up on the center pin of the clip with a small flat blade screwdriver and remove the entire clip, (Figure 1B). The splash guard may also be attached to the bumper cover with rivets or hex bolts at the corners. Most of us have had the dreaded experience where a problem develops with our car, but when we take it in for service the technician cannot repeat the issue. Too often we are sent on our way without resolution, in a questionably safe vehicle. This same issue occurs with forklifts and other industrial trucks. Modern lift trucks are not entirely different from automobiles; they are equipped with sophisticated computer systems, including diagnostic error codes. Service and repair of these vehicles requires a high degree of training and technical expertise. Our experts are often retained in cases where an earlier malfunction in a lift truck could not be repeated by the service technician and was put back into service without repair. When these same vehicles are involved in incidents, our experts are tasked with determining whether or not the malfunction was a contributing cause in the incident and if the lift truck was properly diagnosed and serviced before being returned to service.
Lift truck forks carry larger loads than almost any lifting device yet are often mistreated and forgotten. As insubstantial as they seem, neglecting forks could make them dangerous. There is barely a word about forks mentioned in most operator training manuals or instructed courses. Lift truck technicians may ignore them completely. You can find thousands of extra parts for lift trucks in some fleet repair shops, but you’ll seldom see spare forks. Even when all the trucks on the fleet are the same, fleet maintenance managers rarely order spare forks. Forks last a long time if treated properly, but they can deceive by looking as good from most viewing angles when they are worn as when they are new. It’s true that most forks are customized to the truck by model and capacity: they are big and heavy and thought of as indestructible. But forks can be abused or ruined in the course of daily work. Here are some examples of ways that forks can be damaged: ■ Forks can be overloaded either by picking up a load too far out on the forks, or simply by picking up loads heavier than the truck rating.
Repair Estimator Member: Steve Scott Increase Productivity and Profitability with Repair Estimator. What is your role at Thompson Lift Truck Company? Inside Sales Representative Thompson Lift Truck Company (Georgia) I’m responsible for preparing estimates for all five Georgia branches. I take all items identified on PM sheets, inspections, and service calls and prepare customer estimates. In my world, time is of the essence. What do customers want to know when it comes down to forklift repairs? “How much is this repair going to cost me?” A field tech with good customer relations is who the customer really trusts. If he can get the estimate to the customer before he leaves, the better chance he has for getting the sale.
