Issue #26 - Spring 2006 - Rhode Island College Athletics

Athletics & Alumni: On the Road Again The Rhode Island College Athletic Association and A lumni Association hit the road for the third time in recent months and found themselves in sunny Orlando, Florida. Dr. John Nazarian ’54, President, Ellie O’Neill, Director of the Alumni Association and Don Tencher, Director of Athletics, welcomed nearly 40 people to the College’s inaugural Orlando Alumni and F riends reception. Men’s Basketball Reaches ECAC Finals Anchormen Record Another Solid Season The Rhode Island College men’s basketball team posted a 19-10 overall record and reached the title game of the Eastern College Athle tic Confere nce (ECA C) New En gland Men’s B asketball Championship for the second consecutive year. Head Coach Bob Walsh, the third head coach for the Anchormen in as many years, led the Anchormen to a 9-5 record (third place) in the Little East Conference. After a disappointing loss to eventual champion UMass-Boston in the semifinals of the LEC Tournament, the Anchormen were once again selected to compete in the ECAC Tournament, made up of the top remaining squads in New England that did not receive NCAA Div. III Men’s Basketball Tournament bids. The four th-seeded Anchormen opened with a tough, 70-68, o ver time win against Coast Guar d at The Murray Center on Mar. 1. That set up a reunion with long-time nemesis and LEC foe: top-seeded Keene State on Mar. 3. RIC traveled to Keene, New Hampshire to take on the Owls at Spaulding Gymnasium, one of the toughest places to play in the Northeast, and completely dismantled KSC, downing the Owls Kevin Payette by 38 points in an 86-48 rout.

From Cornrows to Corporate - Teachers Institute of Philadelphia

This unit is designed as a resource for counselors and teachers collaborating on classroom guidance. It is structured as a series of workshops integrated into core and elective courses, and aims to improve emotional behaviors and attitudes of the students. Supporting what guidance counselors refer to as the self-actualization process, the guidances address several identity issues confronting the culturally diverse population of African American students attending University City High School. The first identity issue is cultural misrecognition among the students. The term “African American,” used to describe ninety percent of the students in official school demographics, is misleading, for it underrepresents the cultural diversity of a student body that includes many second and third generation immigrants and refugees from African, Caribbean and Asian countries. A second identity issue relates to the transformation of the neighborhood known among older residents as “the Bottom,” and more recently as “Black Bottom.” Over the past century, this community has been encompassed and subsumed into the expanding corporate world of the Universities of Pennsylvania and Drexel. Community members who have been displaced continue to celebrate the Bottom through an annual reunion at Fairmount Park. Community members who remain in the dwindling patches of what was the Bottom find themselves living inside of a foreign corporate entity now known as University City. In this context, the impending closing of UCHS in 2009 amplifies the sense of displacement.
