Basic Hydroponic Systems and How They Work

Basic Hydroponic Systems and How They Work There are 6 basic types of hydroponic systems; Wick, Water Culture, Ebb and Flow (Flood & Drain), Drip (recovery or non-recovery), N.F.T. (Nutrient Film Technique) and Aeroponic. There are hundreds of variations on these basic types of systems, but all hydroponic methods are a variation (or combination) of these six. Scroll down this page (or click on the system names) to see drawings and a description of each type of hydroponic system. WICK SYSTEM The Wick system is by far the simplest type of hydroponic system. This is a passive system, which means there are no moving parts. The nutrient solution is drawn into the growing medium from the reservoir with a wick. Free plans for a simple wick system are available (click here for plans). This system can use a variety of growing medium. Perlite, Vermiculite, Pro-Mix and Coconut Fiber are among the most popular. The biggest drawback of this system is that plants that are large or use large amounts of water may use up the nutrient solution faster than the wick(s) can supply it.

When to Use a Positive Displacement Pump vs. Centrifugal (pdf)

When to use a Positive Displacement Pump When to use a centrifugal or a Positive Displacement pump (“PD Pump”) is not always a clear choice. To make a good choice between these pump types it is important to understand that these two types of pumps behave very differently. Performance Flow rate versus pressure 250 Head Feet By looking at the performance chart to the right you can see just how different these pumps are. The centrifugal has varying flow depending on pressure or head, whereas the PD pump has more or less constant flow regardless of pressure. 200 150 Positive 100 Centrifugal 50 0 0 50 100 150 Capacity GPM Flow rate versus viscosity Percent Another major difference between the pump types is the effect viscosity has on the capacity of the pump. You will notice in the flow rate chart how the centrifugal pump Flow Rate loses flow as the viscosity goes up but the PD pump’s flow actually increases. This is because 100% the higher viscosity liquids fill the clearances of 90% the pump causing a higher volumetric 80% efficiency. Remember, this chart shows only the Positive 70% effect of viscosity on the pump flow; when there Centrifugal 60% is a viscosity change there is also greater line 50% loss in the system. This means you will also 40% have to calculate the change in pump flow from 0 100 200 300 400 500 the first chart for this pressure change. Viscosity cSt...

How to Use the Finish Thompson Inc. Centrifugal Pump Selector ...

How to Use the Finish Thompson Inc. Centrifugal Pump Selector Finish Thompson’s centrifugal pump selector program has been designed to be easy to use. It allows our collection of centrifugal pumps to be quickly searched to find the ones that most closely meet your selection criteria. The information provided in this document is designed to provide additional information on how our selector operates. Terms of Use Information: Please review the important information found in the “Centrifugal Pump Selector: Terms of Use” section. This can be accessed by clicking on the link (the word “here”) in the following sentence found on the first page of the selector “The user bears primary responsibility for these factors, some of which should be reviewed here” Contact Finish Thompson for Help: If you have trouble using our selector or would like to receive a factory recommendation, please contact us at or click on the link on the first page. Again, it is the word “here” in the following sentence “If you have trouble using the selector or would like a factory recommendation, please click here” Input Selection Criteria This is the form where hydraulic and application criteria are entered. Following is additional information for each choice. “Unit System” – Chose either US or Metric. • If “US” is selected, units of measure will be in US gallons per minute, feet, degrees Fahrenheit and horsepower. • If “Metric” is selected, units of measure will be in m3/hr, meters, degrees Celsius and kW. “Frequency” – Chose either 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The “Nominal Speed” will automatically change based on the frequency selection. “Nominal speed” – At least one of the two speeds shown must be selected. Both speeds are automatically selected. To refine the selection results, deselect one of the speeds by clicking on the “checkmark”. Most customers choose to operate Finish Thompson centrifugal pumps at the higher speed (2900 or 3500 rpm). This typically allows a smaller, less expensive pump to be used for the application. • If 50 Hz is selected, the speeds shown will be 2900 rpm and 1450 rpm. • If 60 Hz is selected, the speeds shown will be 3500 rpm and 1750 rpm. “Flow” – Enter the required flow for the application. The flow must fall within the range displayed. • If “US” was selected for the unit system, enter the flow in gpm (gallons per minute). The selector will automatically round tenths of a gallon to the next higher or lower value (for example, 10.6 gpm will be automatically rounded up to 11 gpm).

TIME OF COMPLIANCE: At overhaul and as engine conditions require. Fuel nozzles can become clogged with a type of varnish from old fuel or from precipitate particles that are almost invisible to the naked eye. This condition may be indicated by rough engine operation, uneven idle, a cold cylinder, or an unusually high fuel flow indication on the gauge. Complete the following steps, in the order given, to remove, clean, and replace the fuel nozzles. Cleaning Instructions Step 1. Examine the nozzle lines for damage or wear. If the nozzle lines are worn or damaged, replace the lines by unscrewing the lines from the flow divider. Step 2. Remove the nozzle assembly from the individual fuel lines using a wrench. Step 3. Insert a plug into the open end of each line to prevent dirt, dust, or other contaminants from entering the fuel lines. Step 4. Remove the nozzles from the cylinders and disassemble. CAUTION Never use a sharp tool such as a wire or pin to clean out a nozzle. Damage to the inlet and outlet fuel restrictors could result which would change the fuel flow. Do not immerse packing rings, at any time, into the cleaning fluid. The rings may swell. Step 5. Clean the nozzles using one of the following approved cleaning liquids for the specified length of time: Hoppes No. 9 Gun Cleaning Solvent 5a. Soak the nozzles in Hoppes No. 9 Gun Cleaning Solvent for 20 minutes. 5b. Rinse the nozzles with Stoddard solvent and blow dry with compressed air. OR...
