What Happened on 9/11? Nine Years of Polling College ...

F O L L O W I N G THE DEATH of Osama Bin Laden, many American young people across the country gathered on street comers and in front of the White House, some celebrating with chants of "U-S-A" and others singing the national anthem. Press coverage of the youthñil celebrators, many of them part of Generation Y or the Millennial Generation, renamed these young people the "9/11 Generation."' Newspaper accounts following Bin Laden's demise discuss him as "the common evil" that the Millennial Generation faced in much the same way as their grandparents had faced Hitler.2 One student remarks that Bin Laden's death is "the defining moment" of his generation.^ Nine-eleven, it appears, is a memorable moment for this generation. Over nine years earlier, on September 11, 2001,1 was also concemed about how young people would come to understand what came to be called "9/11." After spending the moming of September 11, 2001 watching television as the Twin Towers in New York collapsed, I arrived on campus to teach my lower-division history class, and was immediately informed that classes were cancelled for the day because of the "evil attacks." Since I regularly tell my students that "evil" is not a useful analytic term for the writing and understanding of history, I devised a questionnaire for my History 101 students to assess their understanding of the event." You’ve probably always had pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, and maybe Christmas, too, but where did pumpkin come from? No, not in the local market! Pumpkins have an interesting history, and you can trace them back about 9,000 years to different places in Central America. The name ‘pumpkin’ originated from a very old Greek word, ‘pepon’, and over centuries was finally changed into ‘pumpkin’ by the early American colonists. Native Americans used pumpkins in several different ways: when they cleaned the seeds out, they used them for medicine. They would boil them and make a kind of tea that they drank for different sicknesses. They also used them to rub on a snakebite, because they believed the seeds would draw the snake venom (poison) out of the wound. Many years later, the American colonists thought pumpkin seeds would remove freckles if they rubbed them over their faces. Another way Native Americans used the pumpkins was to slice them into long strips, dry them, and then weave them into mats for them to sleep on. Sometimes they even wove them into the long grasses that some tribes used to build their wigwams. When there were pumpkins left over after all the work was done, the Indians cut them into long strips, roasted them over an open fire, and ate them. This was a real treat. The first ‘pumpkin pie’ occurred when the early colonists sliced the top off, cleaned out all the seeds, and filled the inside with milk, spices, and honey, and then baked it in hot ashes. The pumpkin pie changed over many generations, with a lot of different ingredients added to it, until today when it is that delicious Pumpkin Pie your mom bakes as the special dessert for Thanksgiving dinner.

The school’s policy was considered under the Equality Act 2010. The relevant sections were stated to be no different in their substantive effect from the previous related sections of the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. Background facts G is of African-Caribbean ethnicity. In accordance with his family tradition he has never cut his hair and it is kept in cornrows. G was due to commence his secondary education at St Gregory’s Catholic Science College (“the school”) in September 2009. The school’s uniform and appearance policy required boys to have a “short back and sides” haircut. Girls were permitted to have long hair, which could be tied back in cornrows. G was not prepared to cut his hair and when he arrived for his first day at school he was turned away because of noncompliance with the policy.
