About six months ago we had the terrific pleasure of sitting down for coffee with Janet, a resident living in Lakeview Ridge of Westhills. While chit-chatting about her love for the community she now calls home, she told an amazing story about her next-door neighbour, Angela, and their small world tale of having grown up on the East Coast and realizing they had the same sister! Read as Angela tells us more.... The update – Janet and I are moving closer to finding our long, last sister Judy. As far as we are concerned, we were meant to find one another and have since continued to develop their beautiful friendship.

This guideline is an update of the previous Guideline on Infant Oral Health Care, revised in 2009. This revision included a hand search of literature as well as a new search of the MEDLINE/PubMed electronic database using the following parameters: Terms: “infant oral health”, “infant oral health care”, and “early childhood caries”; Fields: all; Limits: within the last 10 years, humans, English, and clinical trials. Papers for review were chosen from the resultant list of 449 articles and from references within selected articles. When data did not appear sufficient or were inconclusive, recommendations were based upon expert and/or consensus opinion by experienced researchers and clinicians. Background The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that caries is the most prevalent infectious disease in our nation’s children.1 More than 40 percent of children have caries by the time they reach kindergarten.2 In contrast to declining prevalence of dental caries among children in older age groups, the prevalence of caries in poor US children under the age of five is increasing.3 Early childhood caries (ECC) and the more severe form of ECC (S-ECC) can be particularly virulent forms of caries, beginning soon after tooth eruption, developing on smooth surfaces, progressing rapidly, and having a lasting detrimental impact onthe dentition.4-9 This disease affects the general population but is 32 times more likely to occur in infants who are of low socioeconomic status, who consume a diet high in sugar, and whose mothers have a low education level.10,11 Caries in primary teeth can affect children’s growth,...

PHP has been used to develop dynamic websites for over 10 years. Initially all PHP websites were written as PHP code interspersed within HTML on the same page. This works very well initially as there is immediate feedback and for simple scripts this appears to be all that is needed. PHP grew in popularity through versions 3 and 4, and so it was inevitable that larger and larger applications would be written in PHP. It became obvious very quickly that intermixing PHP code and HTML was not a long term solution for large websites. The problems are obvious in hindsight: maintainability and extensibility. Whilst PHP intermixed with HTML allows for extremely rapid results, in the longer term it is hard to continue to update the website. One of the really cool features of publishing on the web is that it is dynamic with content and site layouts changing. Large websites change all the time. The look and feel of the site is updated regularly. New content is added and content is regularly re-categorized as the needs of the users (and advertisers!) change. Something had to be done! The Zend Framework was created to help ensure that the production of PHP based websites is easier and maintainable in the long term. It contains a rich set of reusable components containing everything from a set of Model-View-Controller application components to PDF generation. Over the course of this book, we will look at how to use all the components within the context of a real website.

WordPress is the world’s most popular open source website content management system (CMS). As usage of your website increases, accelerating WordPress and its interaction with the underlying MySQL database becomes crucial to maintaining your site response time. Traditionally, organizations have relied on directly modifying applications to improve database performance. For WordPress, that scenario is challenging for many reasons, including keeping up with frequent platform updates, as they are critical to ensuring the security of your website. As a result, acceleration approaches that rely on code-level application tuning take considerable time and resources, because every time a new security update comes out, you may need to re-modify the code or merge code with the new version before you can update WordPress. Database traffic management software from ScaleArc provides a compelling alternative. ScaleArc deploys transparently between an application and a SQL database to improve application performance and availability, needing no modifications to the application accessing the SQL database. ScaleArc has developed SQL traffic management software for MySQL, SQL Server, and Oracle database servers. Deployed in conjunction with WordPress and MySQL, the ScaleArc software instantly improves WordPress performance, allowing the WordPress-based site to scale to potentially support millions of visitors without any changes to the platform.
Emerging online collaboration platforms such as Wikipedia, Twitter, or Facebook provide the foundation for socio-technical systems where humans have become both content consumer and provider. Existing software engineering tools and techniques support the system engineer in designing and assessing the technical infrastructure. Little research, however, addresses the engineer’s need for understanding the overall socio-technical system behavior. The effect of fundamental design decisions becomes quickly unpredictable as multiple collaboration patterns become integrated into a single system. We propose the simulation of human and software elements at the collaboration level. We aim for detecting and evaluating undesirable system behavior such as users experiencing repeated update conflicts or software components becoming overloaded. To this end, this paper contributes (i) a language and (ii) methodology for specifying and simulating large-scale collaboration structures, (iii) example individual and aggregated pattern simulations, and (iv) evaluation of the overall approach.
