Ford 3.0-liter V6s are notorious oil leakers. Knowing where the problems lie and what to look for is crucial for accurate diagnoses and repairs. luck! We’ve also repeatedly checked for mechanical problems with this engine. Crankshaft end play has always been on the money, and the engine runs too smoothly to suspect bad rings forcing blowby gases into the crankcase and raising pressures enough to blow out the seal. Up to now, we’ve tried everything imaginable to keep this seal from popping out—RTV, JB Weld, etc. Before buttoning up the last job, we actually had a local machinist come down and drill, tap and install sheet-metal screws with washers to help keep the seal in position—to no avail. At this point, we’re stymied as to how we should proceed with this engine. Any thoughts you might be able to share will be greatly appreciated. Jack Burnette Clinton, IA At this moment, I have in my shop a 1994 3.0liter Ford Ranger. This truck came in a while back with what appeared to be a leaky rear main oil seal. Upon removing the transmission, however, we discovered that it was actually the oil pan gasket that was the source of the leakage. As a result, we replaced the pan gasket and, since we were in the area, the rear main seal, as well. To make a long story short, we’re now on our sixth seal, all due to leakage problems. The odd thing about this whole saga is that it’s not the seal lip causing the leakage; rather, it’s the seal itself, which for some reason is actually being forced out of its recess in the rear main cap and block. We started each repair with a routine check of the PCV system. Ford Ranger Instrument Cluster Upgrade

I bought my 1993 Ranger new in September of that year, picking one from the dealers’ inventory. The truck I selected had everything I wanted on it except for a tachometer, but I could live without that. Thirteen years and 146000 miles later I was investigating the oil pressure “idiot gauge” mod when I had the thought of replacing the instrument cluster with a tach model. I was able to find one at a local junkyard. The counter guy there assured me that it was from a 93 Explorer. It looked ok, and at ten bucks, the price was right. When I got it home I checked it over carefully. I found a tiny stamp that read “Date of Manufacture February 11 1992”. That seemed a little early for the 93 model year, so I traced out all of the connections on the cluster’s flex circuit. To my momentary dismay, practically none of the connections were in the same place as on my existing cluster. I surmised that the one I bought was from a 92 Explorer, and that Ford had done a wiring change between the 92 and 93 model years. I am an electronics engineer with over thirty years experience in avionics, communications, automation, and robotics. I’ve dealt with problems more complex than this! Physically, both clusters were the same. Same form, same connectors, same bolt patterns. After analyzing the situation it was clear that to make this work, it would be a simple matter of moving some of the wires in the two cluster connectors. Certain rear wheel bearings use the axle as an inner race; that is the bearing rollers ride directly on the axle shaft itself. At times, worn or pitted rollers, chipped or damaged bearings can wear a groove into the axle shaft. (See Fig. 1 on next page) Over time, the seal may also wear a groove into the axle shaft. (See Fig. 2 on next page) When this occurs it’s usually necessary to replace the axle shaft assembly, bearings and seal. A cost saving approach offered by SKF is an axle shaft repair bearing. The axle repair bearing assembly replaces both the bearing and the conventional seal requiring no additional parts. The repair bearing moves the position of the bearing and seal so that they ride on an unworn section of the axle shaft. Six part numbers R1559, R1561-F, R1561-G, R1563, R57509 and R59047 cover the most popular Chrysler, Ford and GM axles. Each repair bearing comes ready to install for fast and reliable service. Prior to replacement of the repair bearing assembly, the axle shaft should be examined for rust, corrosion, or imperfections that would prevent the bearing or seal from proper seating or sealing of the new repair bearing. The axle tube housing depth should be checked to ensure the repair bearing can be used for your application. The depth and inner dimension of the axle tube should be compared to the width and outside diameter of the repair bearing. Certain models have a narrowed axle tube that will not allow the repair bearing to be properly installed. If the axle tube has a bearing seat on the inside of the axle tube, measure the depth from the outside edge of the axle tube to the inside seat and compare this to your repair bearing width. This measurement will ensure the repair bearing can be properly seated. Next measure the axle tube inner dimension with a telescoping gauge; this will determine if the axle tube may narrow on the inside. If the axle tube does not narrow and the seat recess measurement is acceptable follow the guidelines on the following page for installation.
