A shop recently called our hotline in a panic! “I have a 2005 Toyota Prius, in for an oil change,” said the caller, “and the car started by itself when it was on the lift! There was NO oil in the engine and the oil drain plug is in my hand!!” This story is real, and the names have been changed to protect the innocent. So where did the tech go wrong? It is easy to say after the fact that the shop was not properly trained to work on this Hybrid car. But this was a gas engine oil change, not a high voltage electric motor service. My opinion on the training is not as grim. While Hybrid vehicle training is definitely needed, what is often needed is simply familiarization and safety training to do most service work. In my opinion, you do not need to be a Hybrid “Guru” to service Hybrid vehicles. So what happened to this car? Why did it run with the drain plug out? The real key to this problem was in the smart key system (no pun intended). Many cars now have smart keys in them today - not just Hybrids. However, this Hybrid by nature gave the tech a false sense of security that added to the problem. This is because a Toyota Hybrid Gas Engine does not usually run at idle. If you are not familiar with the smart key system, it is a system that essentially allows the customer to open and start their car without ever taking the keys out of their pocket. How Electronic Fuel Injection Works Electronic Fuel injection works on the some very basic principles. The following discussion broadly outlines how a basic or Convention Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system operates. The Electronic Fuel Injection system can be divided into three: basic sub-systems. These are the fuel delivery system, air induction system, and the electronic control system. The Fuel Delivery System • The fuel delivery system consists of the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel delivery pipe (fuel rail), fuel injector, fuel pressure regulator, and fuel return pipe. • Fuel is delivered from the tank to the injector by means of an electric fuel pump. The pump is typically located in or near the fuel tank. Contaminants are filtered out by a high capacity in line fuel filter. • Fuel is maintained at a constant pressure by means of a fuel pressure regulator. Any fuel which is not delivered to the intake manifold by the injector is returned to the tank through a fuel return pipe. The Air Induction System • The air induction system consists of the air cleaner, air flow meter, throttle valve, air intake chamber, intake manifold runner, and intake valve. • Air delivered to the engine is a function of driver demand. As the throttle valve is opened further, more air is allowed to enter the engine cylinders. • When the throttle valve is opened, air flows through the air cleaner, through the air flow meter (on L type systems), past the throttle valve, and through a well tuned intake manifold runner to the intake valve. • Toyota engines use two different methods to measure intake air volume. The L type EFI system measures air flow directly by using an air flow meter. The D type EFI system measures air flow indirectly by monitoring the pressure in the intake manifold.
