The PwC World Cup Index: what can the dismal science tell us about the beautiful game? Executive summary As the 2014 World Cup in Brazil draws closer, there is increasing interest in what makes a successful World Cup nation. This paper (which builds on an earlier one in 2010) contributes to this debate by using econometric analysis to test the correlation between several variables and World Cup performance. We aim to answer the following questions: Instead, we found a number of football-specific variables which explain World Cup performance better, such as the number of registered football players in each country and average football attendance levels. The other factors that we found to be important were a long-term footballing tradition and recent form as reflected in the FIFA world rankings. Brazil are the favourites, England face a struggle in the Group of Death Which countries have underachieved and overachieved in past World Cups? Who are the strongest countries in the 2014 World Cup, and which group is the ‘Group of Death’? After identifying the extent to which different variables explain World Cup performance, we created a composite indicator which measures the relative strength of each competing country across a weighted average of these characteristics. This produces a ‘PwC World Cup Index’ that provides a novel way of assessing each country’s relative prospects in the 2014 World Cup.
perators... are increasingly recognizing the need for a systematic assessment and management of flexible pipe integrity, but the identification of critical criteria and the means to best achieve valid and efficient inspection and monitoring (I&M) continues to evolve. Emerging technologies in I&M and operators’ expanding implementation of riskbased management are leading the way toward achieving a comprehensive integrity management approach for flexible pipeline and riser systems worldwide. Flexible pipes are being installed and operated in more marginal and challenging offshore conditions, adding to the complexity of acquiring complete and valid data for the determination of their integrity. Especially important is the accurate assessment of the remaining life of a flexible riser so operators can avoid costly premature change outs. To further develop the definition of best practices in flexible pipe integrity assurance, the SureFlex Joint Industry Project (JIP) presented key findings from its extensive 20-month-long survey work, including flexible pipe use worldwide, statistics on design limits, damage, and failure incidences. Conducted under the auspices of the Oil and Gas UK, a trade association for the United Kingdom upstream oil and gas industry, the “State of the Art Report on Flexible Pipe Integrity and Guidance Note on Monitoring Methods and Integrity Assurance for Unbonded Flexible Pipes (2010)” revisited the state of flexible pipe since the first survey in 2001 to 2002. The scope of work was international in its content and had the support of international companies outside of the UK.
Numerical techniques based on pressure-velocity formulation have been adopted to solve approximately, the governing equations for viscous flows through a tube (simulating an artery) with a periodic constriction. The effect of the constriction as well as the rigid of the tube, on the flow characteristics, and its consequences for arterial disease is the focus of this investigation. The unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by using the finite-difference technique in staggered grid distribution. The haemodynamic factors like wall shear stress, pressure and velocity are analyzed through their graphical representations. Maximum resistance is attained in case of rigid stenosed tube rather than the flexible one. The main result is to contribute that the recirculating region is larger in case of a rigid tube than that of flexible one. Low brake pedal, DTC stored in ECBM. Owners of a slew of 2009-13 GM cars and light trucks (complete application list below) may complain that their brake pedal feels very low or sinks to the floor on brake application. Upon scanning the brake system, you may find DTC C027B logged in the ECBM. One likely cause of the trouble, reports GM, is a small vacuum leak between the master cylinder and the brake booster. A missing or dislodged O-ring is the source of the leakage. The illustration at right shows a typical GM master cylinder/brake booster arrangement. The O-ring should fit over the raised area on the cylinder and into a small groove in the booster, as shown. So what causes the O-ring to dislodge or go missing? Removing the master cylinder without pumping the brake pedal several times to exhaust the vacuum in the booster. This typically occurs, says GM, when the cylinder is disconnected and moved aside to get to another component for repair. Repositioning or installing a new O-ring should eliminate the vacuum leak and subsequent pedal issues.
