THE IMPACT OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARDS ON STANDBY POWER IN CONSUMER ELECTRONICS DESIGN A Lattice Semiconductor White Paper May 2010 Lattice Semiconductor 5555 Northeast Moore Ct. Hillsboro, Oregon 97124 USA Telephone: (503) 268-8000 www.latticesemi.com 1 The Impact of Energy Efficiency Standards on Standby Power in Consumer Electronics Design A Lattice Semiconductor White Paper Regulatory Measures to Reduce Standby Power Squeezing every last microwatt from a system is a common objective for engineers who are designing battery operated equipment. And as more strict government regulations regarding power consumption appear, even traditional home and office appliances like LCD TVs, set top boxes (STBs) and multifunction printers (MFPs) are being scrutinized for ways to save power. To help ensure products are in compliance with the latest EnergyStar and European Commission Code of Conduct regulations, designers are seeking innovative ways to provide low-power modes of operation in a variety of product lines. This white paper examines design methods and practical advice for saving power using programmable logic devices (PLDs). The 1-Watt Plan is an energy saving proposal by the International Energy Agency (www.iea.org) to reduce standby power use in all appliances to just one watt. Standby power, also called vampire or phantom power, refers to the electricity consumed by many appliances when they are switched off or in standby mode. The typical power loss per appliance is low (from 1 to 25 W), but when multiplied by the billions of appliances in residential and commercial use, standby losses represent a significant fraction of total world electricity use. Research indicates that standby power accounts for as much as 7-13% of household power consumption. While the definition of standby power use depends on the product being analyzed, standby power includes at a minimum the power used while the product is performing no function. PLDs are increasingly being applied to maximize the amount of circuitry that can be unpowered or placed in a standby/sleep mode when the system is idle. Since modern programmable logic devices (PLDs) have very low static current requirements, often in the microampere range, they are ideal as system event...
Sales Tax Fact Sheet 176 This fact sheet explains sales tax exemptions that apply to local governments. What’s New in 2013 Starting Jan. 1, 2014, cities and counties are exempt from sales and use tax on purchases used to provide certain government services. Townships have had this exemption since Oct. 1, 2011. Cities and counties must pay sales and use tax on their taxable purchases made through Dec. 31, 2013. Minnesota Statutes, section 297A.70, subdivision 2, allows local governments to buy some goods and services without paying sales and use tax. Purchases of items or services are exempt if they are used to provide local government services that are not generally provided by a private business. as a city, county, or town or a component of a city, county or town.) Nontaxable (Exempt) Purchases To qualify for this exemption, purchases must meet the following requirements: The purchases are “inputs,” used to provide government services. (See examples, below, and Other Taxable Purchases, next page.) The purchases are not used as inputs to services that are generally provided by a private business. (See Taxable Purchases, on next page.) The purchases are billed to, and paid directly by, the local government. (Employee purchases that are reimbursed are taxable.) For example, purchases used to provide the following government services would be exempt: Cities, Counties, and Townships For purposes of this exemption, “local governments” means only cities, counties, and townships (towns). It may include some cooperative agreements. Housing services Sewer and water services Wastewater treatment services Local governments acting under an agreement authorized by statute – such as the Joint Powers Act (Minnesota Statutes, section 471.59) – may claim the exemption for their joint activities only if: Ambulance services Public safety services Correctional services Chore or homemaking services for residents who are elderly or disabled Road and street maintenance and lighting the agreement is limited to Minnesota cities, counties, townships, school districts or some combination of them; and .

Rising energy costs are generating new interest in thermal energy based refrigeration systems. These can compete with electrical energy based refrigeration systems if the source of heat energy is waste heat or solar energy. Chillers for industrial use based on absorption refrigeration are commercialized now. In India M/S Thermax manufactures and markets lithium bromide/ water system, based absorption refrigeration machines for industrial and institutional use. These systems are relevant to India because: 1. Ambient temperatures are high through out the year in most parts of the country. Higher ambient temperatures mean more energy is consumed in refrigeration 2. Solar insolation is high in most parts of the country. This implies that we have more energy at our disposal. 3. There is huge potential demand for refrigeration in rural areas, which are best suited for solar energy based refrigeration systems Proposal: Solar energy based refrigeration is an idea whose time has come. The economics are moving into positive zone. Companies who get into this line can expect to reap the benefits in next five years time. Product mix:
