The following outline shows a basic format for most academic papers. No matter what length the paper needs to be, it should still follow the format of having an introduction, body, and conclusion. Read over what typically goes in each section of the paper. Use the back of this handout to outline information for your specific paper. The introduction should have some of the following elements, depending on the type of paper: Start with an attention grabber: a short story, example, statistic, or historical context that introduces the paper topic Give an overview of any issues involved with the subject Define of any key terminology need to understand the topic Quote or paraphrase sources revealing the controversial nature of the subject (argumentative papers only) Highlight background information on the topic needed to understand the direction of the paper Write an antithesis paragraph, presenting the primary opposing views (argumentative paper only) The introduction must end with a THESIS statement (a 1 to 2 sentences in length): Tell what the overall paper will focus on Briefly outline the main points in the paper. Clearly present the main points of the paper as listed in the thesis Give strong examples, details, and explanations to support each main points If an argumentative paper, address any counterarguments and refute those arguments If a research paper, use strong evidence from sources—paraphrases, summaries, and quotations that support the main points. Restate your thesis from the introduction in different words Briefly summarize each main point found in the body of the paper (avoid going over 2 sentences for each point) Give a statement of the consequences of not embracing the position (argumentative paper only) End with a strong clincher statement: an appropriate, meaningful final sentence that ties the whole point of the paper together (may refer back to the attention grabber) Additional Tips Decide on the thesis and main points first You do not need to start writing your paper with the introduction Try writing the thesis and body first; then go back and figure out how to best introduce the body and conclude the paper Use transitions between main points and between examples within the main points Always keep your thesis in the forefront of your mind while writing; everything in your paper must point back to the thesis Use the back of this handout to make an outline of your paper

In this paper, I describe some of the recent developments in the database management area, in particular the NoSQL phenomenon and the hoopla associated with it. The goal of the paper is not to do an exhaustive survey of NoSQL systems. The aim is to do a broad brush analysis of what these developments mean - the good and the bad aspects! Based on my more than three decades of database systems work in the research and product arenas, I will outline what are many of the pitfalls to avoid since there is currently a mad rush to develop and adopt a plethora of NoSQL systems in a segment of the IT population, including the research community. In rushing to develop these systems to overcome some of the shortcomings of the relational systems, many good principles of the latter, which go beyond the relational model and the SQL language, have been left by the wayside. Now many of the features that were initially discarded as unnecessary in the NoSQL systems are being brought in, but unfortunately in ad hoc ways. Hopefully, the lessons learnt over three decades with relational and other systems would not go to waste and we wouldn’t let history repeat itself with respect to simple minded approaches leading to enormous pain later on for developers as well as users of the NoSQL systems! Caveat: What I express in this paper are my personal opinions and they do not necessarily reflect the opinions of my employer.

The LM34 series are precision integrated-circuit temperature sensors, whose output voltage is linearly proportional to the Fahrenheit temperature. The LM34 thus has an advantage over linear temperature sensors calibrated in degrees Kelvin, as the user is not required to subtract a large constant voltage from its output to obtain convenient Fahrenheit scaling. The LM34 does not require any external calibration or trimming to provide typical accuracies of ± 1⁄2˚F at room temperature and ± 11⁄2˚F over a full −50 to +300˚F temperature range. Low cost is assured by trimming and calibration at the wafer level. The LM34’s low output impedance, linear output, and precise inherent calibration make interfacing to readout or control circuitry especially easy. It can be used with single power supplies or with plus and minus supplies. As it draws only 75 µA from its supply, it has very low self-heating, less than 0.2˚F in still air. The LM34 is rated to operate over a −50˚ to +300˚F temperature range, while the LM34C is rated for a −40˚ to +230˚F range (0˚F with improved accuracy). The LM34 series is available packaged in hermetic TO-46 transistor packages, while the LM34C, LM34CA and LM34D are also available in the plastic TO-92 transistor package. The LM34D is also available in an 8-lead surface mount small outline package. The LM34 is a complement to the LM35 (Centigrade) temperature sensor.
