The Homemade Nobel Peace Prize Why the European Union ... - WZB

After many previous nominations, the European Union (EU) has finally been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited the EU’s contribution to peace between France and Germany and its influence on successful democratization in Southern, Central and Eastern Europe as the reason behind the decision. Yet, none of these events took place in 2012. Even if we credit the EU with these achievements, the award seems slightly awkward at a time when so many EU citizens are suffering under the harsh austerity measures intended to save the Eurozone. Taking into consideration the EU’s longterm achievements and the current Eurozone predicament leads me to ask: Why now? To answer this question, we need to understand the domestic politics of Norway. Norway is not a member of the EU. It has applied for membership twice, in the early 1970s and the early 1990s. Referendums on membership in 1972 and 1994 were close, and the population was deeply divided on the issue. Both times, votes against membership held a narrow majority, but the issue remained on the political agenda. Ever since the first referendum in 1972, EU membership has continuously been a bone of contention in Norway. Couples divorce, siblings stop talking to each other and flying an EU flag in public easily invites verbal, if not physical abuse. Permanent ‘yes’ and ‘no’ movements exist – Europabevegelsen and Nei til EU – with widespread cross-partisan membership and grass roots organization. Every political party has a clear position on the ...

Internet Developments in the Egyptian tourism ... - ResearchGate

Tourism developments are a top priority on the strategic agenda of the Egyptian government. Internet penetration could prove to be one of the major factors that could assist Egypt tourism to enhance its competitiveness. The Internet can potentially improve the efficiency of all local suppliers and provide tools for the development and delivery of differentiated tourism products. This study aims to investigate the activities and usage of Internet by Egyptian tourism organisations and future trends. Findings reveal that Egyptian tourism organisations are in hybrid stage concerning Internet developments. Most tourism establishments use the Internet mainly as a communication tool. Few organisations have websites and a very small percentage has established a comprehensive Internet presence. Nevertheless, people in the industry have faith in this technology, but still they are not ready to invest in it. It is concluded that the government should adopt a comprehensive eTourism strategy that will enable Tourism in Egypt to enhance its competitiveness and achieve its full potential. OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is a not-for-profit, international consortium that drives the development, convergence, and adoption of e-business standards. Members themselves set the OASIS technical agenda, using a lightweight, open process expressly designed to promote industry consensus and unite disparate efforts. The consortium produces open standards for Web services, security, ebusiness, and standardization efforts in the public sector and for application-specific markets. OASIS was founded in 1993. More information can be found on the OASIS website at http://www.oasis-open.org. The Electronic Business (eBusiness) eXtensible Markup Language (XML) [ebXML] set of specifications enable electronic trading relationships between business partners. The heterogeneous nature of eBusiness transactions require a flexible infrastructure/framework that supports simple service calls and complex document exchange. For eBusiness, key integration patterns realize SOA benefits in a pragmatic iterative manner. Today, the original set of ebXML specifications have evolved to integrate use of other specifications and emerging technologies as part of eBusiness solutions focused on Service-Oriented Architecture.
