For P/No: 04998 & 04999 only. 1. In the engine bay, disconnect the negative and positive battery terminals. 2. Remove the vehicle battery (1) by first removing any fasteners. 3. Locate the vehicle grommet behind the battery cavity area. 4. Pierce a hole in the vehicle grommet. Note: Do not connect the harness to the battery at this point. Note: Do not connect the harness to the battery at this point. 7. Route the power input harness (1) from the engine bay down through to the chassis, following the path of the brake and fuel lines. For P/No: 04997 & 04999 only. 8. Following the diagram on the right, house the two power & ground input harness female terminals (4) into the mating connector (3). 9. Following the diagram on the right, house the three power & ground input harness female terminals (4) into the mating connector (5). 11. Connect the power input harness connector (5) to the body harness mating connector. 12. Route the body harness (1) along the LHS chassis rail, following the path of the blue vehicle harness towards the rear of the vehicle. 13. Cardan (cross) type universal joint operation is typically designed to be in a range of 1 to 3°, figure 1. A cardan type joint can operate for short periods of time at angles up to approximately eight degrees. Angles that are not within the desired range will cause drive line vibration and significantly shorten the life of the universal joint. Vibration that is created by incorrect u-joint angles is usually most noticeable at low speeds, under 40 mph., under load or acceleration. If a problem with u-joint angle is suspected perform the following basic inspection procedures. 1. Rotate the drive shaft to check for binding, or misalignment of the cross or bearing cups. 2. Check that all surfaces are clean. 3. Check the condition of the motor and transmission mounts. Broken mounts are a frequent cause of drive shaft vibration and are often overlooked. If these conditions are satisfactory a preliminary check of angles can be made with an inclinometer. Before attempting to measure angles ensure that tire air pressure is correct, that the vehicle is at the correct trim (chassis) height, and the ground surface is level. 1. Measure the angle of the front slip yoke by placing the inclinometer on the bottom of the bearing cup, figure 2. Position the inclinometer on the clean flat surface of the bearing cup, level the bubble and note the reading. 2. Measure the drive shaft angle, as shown, and subtract the smaller number from the greater to determine the angle. 3. Repeat the same procedure on the rear u-joint and pinion input shaft.

PURPOSE During the OBD--II drive cycle, the OBD--II system checks each emission control system by monitoring it for proper operation. It is necessary to run the OBD--II drive cycle: D After repairing an affected vehicle to eliminate a fuel--related or emission--related diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The OBD--II drive cycle will monitor the affected emission system and confirm that the repair was successful. D If the vehicle’s I/M test (“smog check”) results indicate that the OBD--II Readiness Monitors are “incomplete.” Readiness Codes for 1996--98 models are not set to “complete” until all required monitors have gone through one complete monitor cycle. OBD--II monitors could identify a failure. After that, Readiness Codes are set to “complete” after each individual monitor has been completed. Effective January 2, 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will require that vehicles must have all OBD--II Readiness Codes “complete” at the time of an I/M test. This bulletin contains: S OBD--II drive cycle procedure for 1996-97 affected vehicles only (Refer to the appropriate service manual for 1998 and later model OBD--II drive cyle procedures.) Removal (Diamante) 1) Remove hood. Drain cooling system. Remove radiator. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain engine oil and transaxle oil. Remove front exhaust pipe. Remove transaxle assembly. See appropriate CLUTCHES or TRANSMISSION SERVICING article. 2) Disconnect accelerator cable, brake booster vacuum hose, fuel supply and return lines, and heater hoses. Disconnect EGR temperature sensor (if equipped). Unplug vacuum hose connector. Remove drive belts. Remove power steering pump and A/C compressor, leaving hoses attached. 3) Unplug all harness connectors. Remove bolt from body ground connection. Disconnect alternator wiring inside relay box. Remove relay box and engine wiring harness connection. On models with ABS, remove radiator overflow tank and bracket. 4) Attach engine hoist. Raise engine enough to take weight from mounts. Remove engine mount bracket. Remove damper. Remove rear roll stopper bracket mount bolt. Remove front roll stopper bracket mount bolt. Carefully lift engine from car. Installation (Diamante) To install, reverse removal procedure. Install engine mount bracket so that arrow points away from engine, toward body. Install new "O" rings on fuel lines. Install new exhaust gaskets and nuts. Adjust throttle cable. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE at the end of this article. Replenish fluids. CAUTION: DO NOT allow foreign material into turbocharger air intake hoses or pipes.

Criticism of First Turkish-German Minister Grows By Anna Reimann Aygül Özkan was meant to be the hope of a new generation of politicians in Germany. In April she became the first politician with German-Turkish roots to become a minister in a state government. But her first months in office have proven to be a disaster and what could have been a public relations coup for her conservative party has backfired. Aygül Özkan, 38, was meant to be the next great hope for a new generation of German politicians. In April, she became the first person of Turkish origin to be appointed as a government minister at the state level . Indeed, it was rare that a politician had been given as much advance praise or had been saddled with such great expectations. "She's a major role model, with her competence and her character and she will get off to a good start and do a good job," Christian Wulff, then the state governor of Lower Saxony and now Germany's president, said at the time. He said she would also help to "prevent parallel societies" from forming, a reference to immigrant ghettos many politicians fear are developing in German cities. At the time of her appointment as social minister, Özkan was feted not just by her party, Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), but across the political spectrum. But Özkan's time in office so far has been marred by controversy. Only days before taking up her job, Özkan said in an interview that "Christian symbols" -- specifically crucifixes, "do not belong in state-run schools." She added that Muslim headscarves don't, either -positions that had even been backed by Germany's highest court. But pressure from within her party was tremendous and Wulff reprimanded his protégé, who in turn apologized. Later, Özkan sparked controversy because of employee contracts she had signed as a manager at TNT, a postal services company. At the company, some workers received wages of only €7.50 ($9.80) per hour. Employment lawyers accused her of having created "working conditions that were at the legal limits." The politician responded by describing the criticism as "absurd" and "unfounded." A Controversial Charter for the Media And last week, she caused an outcry when she called on journalists to sign a so-called "media charter for Lower Saxony," in which they were supposed to agree to common standards for reporting about integration efforts in the state.
