Softail Oil Change From time to time I see question on the forum regarding doing an oil change on a Harley and more specifically about doing a scavenging oil change on a Softail. Since there didn't seem to be a good thread on doing an oil change with pictures, I thought I would write something up. This oil change was done on a 2001 Fat Boy. So, some of the tools and procedure may be different for your specific application. Tools Motorcycle lift 1/4" Allen head socket or long Allen head tool (for engine oil and transmission oil drain plugs) 3/8" Allen head socket or Allen head tool (transmission oil fill plug) 3/8" drive ratchet wrench 6" long 3/8" drive extension 3/8" drive universal joint (may or may not need depending on bike location on lift) 1/4" drive ratchet wrench T27 Torx head socket or torx head tool (primary cover screws) T40 Torx head socket or torx head tool (primary oil drain plug) Oil filter wrench Oil catch tool for filter (optional) Oil drain pan (preferably 2) Flashlight 3/8" Fuel / Oil line removal tool (Scavenging oil change ONLY) Clear tygon tubing (Scavenging oil change ONLY)

Place retainer ring against back of LED housing with flat notch facing down to match up with clamshell on trim ring 3. Place trim ring over front of LED light and fully seat against flange of LED assembly. 4. Rotate LED assembly so that TOP indicated on LED lens is actually at the 12:00 O’clock position on the bike, 5. Place the LED housing, trim ring and retainer onto light housing of bike. 6. DETACHABLE QUARTER FAIRING AND DOCKING HARDWARE KIT General This kit is for installation on 1988 and later XL, FXR and FXD model motorcycles with 39 mm front forks. This kit does not fit XL Custom or FXLR model motorcycles. This kit must be installed with Docking Hardware Kit Part Number 58164-96. This kit must be purchased separately from your Harley-Davidson Dealer. NOTE Fork tubes may slide downward within fork brackets. If this occurs, front fork tube extension above front fork upper bracket will have to be readjusted according to appropriate Service Manual procedures. 7. Connect the right directional light as follows: Strip approx. 5/16 in. of insulation from the wires cut in step 3. 8. Crimp solderless connectors from kit on two wires coming from motorcycle. 9. Split one end of the 2-conductor polarized wire from kit back about 2 in. and strip 5/16 in. of insulation from wire ends. See Service Parts Illustration on page 5 for a list of kit contents. NOTE A Service Manual for your vehicle is available from your HarleyDavidson Dealer. Installation 1WARNING The rider's safety depends upon the correct installation of this kit. Some models have front directional lights equipped with three wires, the third black wire is a ground wire. Check to determine how many wires are connected to the front directional lights and follow the following procedure that applies. If directional lights are not mounted on the upper fork bracket proceed to “ASSEMBLING FAIRING".
