Guideline on Prescribing Dental Radiographs for Infants, Children ...

Radiographs are valuable aids in the oral health care of infants, children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs. They are used to diagnose oral diseases and to monitor dentofacial development and the progress of therapy. The recommendations in the ADA/FDA guidelines were developed to serve as an adjunct to the dentist’s professional judgment. The timing of the initial radiographic examination should not be based upon the patient’s age, but upon each child’s individual circumstances. Because each patient is unique, the need for dental radiographs can be determined only after reviewing the patient’s medical and dental histories, completing a clinical examination, and assessing the patient’s vulnerability to environmental factors that affect oral health. Radiographs should be taken only when there is an expectation that the diagnostic yield will affect patient care. The AAPD recognizes that there may be clinical circumstances for which a radiograph is indicated, but a diagnostic image cannot be obtained. For example, the patient may be unable to cooperate or the dentist may have privileges in a health care facility lacking intraoral radiographic capabilities. If radiographs of diagnostic quality are unobtainable, the dentist should confer with the parent to determine appropriate management techniques (eg, preventive/restorative interventions, advanced behavior guidance modalities, deferral, referral), giving consideration to the relative risks and benefits of the v

Antioxidants: Do they have a role in the treatment of insulin ...

Received April 8, 2006 Insulin resistance, defined as an attenuated or inadequate response to a given amount of insulin, is associated with a wide variety of conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes, essential hypertension, cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver, breast cancer, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Although pharmacological options for the management of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes have been increasing, not all patients benefit, as the cost of prescription medications is often beyond the financial capacity of many patients. A potential new approach is the use of antioxidants. The objectives of this review are to discuss the scientific rationale for proposing the evaluation of antioxidants for insulin resistance, and to provide an update of intervention studies, with an emphasis on clinical trials, in which antioxidants have been tested. Briefly, this approach capitalizes on emerging data implicating lipid oversupply, chronic, lowgrade inflammation, and oxidative stress as root causes in the development and exacerbation of insulin resistance. Key words Antioxidants - diabetes - insulin resistance - lipoic acid Insulin resistance, defined as an attenuated or inadequate response to a given amount of insulin, is associated with a wide variety of conditions including obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D), essential hypertension, cardiovascular disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver, breast cancer, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) 1-3. An individual with insulin resistance is strongly predisposed to an increased risk for life threatening clinical conditions including T2D, and the metabolic syndrome 4 (also known as the insulin resistance syndrome 5). T2D has reached epidemic proportions in the US and worldwide (>18 million and 160 million individuals, respectively), and is projected to increase dramatically 6. There are an estimated 50 million individuals (US) and 314 million individuals (worldwide) with the metabolic syndrome 7,8 .

A Strategy for U.S. Natural Gas Exports - The Hamilton Project

The Hamilton Project seeks to advance America’s promise of opportunity, prosperity, and growth. We believe that today’s increasingly competitive global economy demands public policy ideas commensurate with the challenges of the 21st Century. The Project’s economic strategy reflects a judgment that long-term prosperity is best achieved by fostering economic growth and broad participation in that growth, by enhancing individual economic security, and by embracing a role for effective government in making needed public investments. Our strategy calls for combining public investment, a secure social safety net, and fiscal discipline. In that framework, the Project puts forward innovative proposals from leading economic thinkers — based on credible evidence and experience, not ideology or doctrine — to introduce new and effective policy options into the national debate. The Project is named after Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first Treasury Secretary, who laid the foundation for the modern American economy. Hamilton stood for sound fiscal policy, believed that broad-based opportunity for advancement would drive American economic growth, and recognized that “prudent aids and encouragements on the part of government” are necessary to enhance and guide market forces. The guiding principles of the Project remain consistent with these views. A Strategy for U.S. Natural Gas Exports Michael Levi Council on Foreign Relations JUNE 2012

16 AFI 36-2903 18 JULY 2011 Chapter 3 GROOMING AND ...

3.1. Personal Grooming Standards. This chapter outlines personal grooming while wearing any Air Force uniform or civilian clothing in an official capacity. Commander’s discretion may be used to determine if individual’s personal grooming is within standards of this instruction. Commanders do not have authority to waive grooming and appearance standards except as identified in this instruction. The personal grooming standards listed are minimum standards that represent common appearance issues and are not all-inclusive. Although Airmen have the right, within established limits, to express their individuality through their appearance, the Air Force has defined what is and what is not an acceptable, professional military image for Airmen. Except for minor variations based on gender differences, all Air Force personnel must comply with the same personal grooming standards. Supervisors have the responsibility to determine compliance with the letter and intent of this AFI and to correct the obvious violations regardless of whether the situation identified is clearly written in this AFI. 3.1.1. Hair-male and female. Will be clean, well-groomed, present a professional appearance, allow proper wear of headgear, helmet or chemical mask and conform to safety requirements. Will not contain excessive amounts of grooming aids (e.g. gel, mousse, pomade, moisturizer), appear lopsided, touch either eyebrow, or end below an imaginary line across the forehead at the top of the eyebrows that is parallel to the ground. If applied, dyes, tints, bleaches and frostings must result in natural, human hair colors. The hair color must complement the member’s complexion and skin tone. Examples of natural human hair colors are brown, blonde, brunette, natural red, black or grey. Prohibited examples (not all inclusive) are burgundy, purple, orange, fluorescent or neon colors. Exception: Commander may temporarily authorize cancer patients to wear approved caps (black/tan), wigs or maintain baldness due to a temporary medical condition (i.e., radiation/chemotherapy). If...
