PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE INSTALLING. 1. You should always disconnect the battery, negative lead first, before working on the ignition system. When you are done reconnect the battery installing the positive lead first. 2. The drive gear installed on this distributor is melonized and therefore compatible with flat tappet or hydraulic roller camshafts. If it is to be installed with a mechanical roller camshaft, a bronze or other such compatible gear for the 0.500” shaft will need to be purchased and installed. HOW TO INSTALL THE DISTRIBUTOR 1. If the distributor to be replaced has not already been removed from the engine, remove its cap. Do not remove the spark plug wires at this time. 2. Crank the engine slowly until the rotor blade aims at a fixed point on the engine or firewall. Note this point for future reference. 3. Unplug all external connectors coming from the distributor. 4. Now put the existing cap back on and note and mark which spark plug wire the rotor (blade) is pointing at. Then number the wires according to cylinder and remove the wires. If in doubt you can leave the wires connected to the old cap and transfer them to the new cap and distributor later in the process (see point # 9).

TIME OF COMPLIANCE: At overhaul and as engine conditions require. Fuel nozzles can become clogged with a type of varnish from old fuel or from precipitate particles that are almost invisible to the naked eye. This condition may be indicated by rough engine operation, uneven idle, a cold cylinder, or an unusually high fuel flow indication on the gauge. Complete the following steps, in the order given, to remove, clean, and replace the fuel nozzles. Cleaning Instructions Step 1. Examine the nozzle lines for damage or wear. If the nozzle lines are worn or damaged, replace the lines by unscrewing the lines from the flow divider. Step 2. Remove the nozzle assembly from the individual fuel lines using a wrench. Step 3. Insert a plug into the open end of each line to prevent dirt, dust, or other contaminants from entering the fuel lines. Step 4. Remove the nozzles from the cylinders and disassemble. CAUTION Never use a sharp tool such as a wire or pin to clean out a nozzle. Damage to the inlet and outlet fuel restrictors could result which would change the fuel flow. Do not immerse packing rings, at any time, into the cleaning fluid. The rings may swell. Step 5. Clean the nozzles using one of the following approved cleaning liquids for the specified length of time: Hoppes No. 9 Gun Cleaning Solvent 5a. THE PERFECT OIL CHANGE The “Perfect Oil Change” is the easiest thing in the world to do. The problem is that oil changes are often seen as a chore, and the necessary time and attention are often skimped in the rush to get to something that seems more important. You may well be the first owner of the tractor to do this right. The first step is to get the motor good and hot. Run it for at least a half-hour, until the cylinder head is too hot to touch and the oil filter can is uncomfortably warm. This ensures that the oil is hot, which makes it flow easier, and it also makes sure that any crud in the oil is fully entrained and will come out with it. Park it, shut it off, and immediately remove the drain plug on the underside of the engine. Have a drain pan that will hold 6 quarts of oil under the drain. You’ll get a hot, oily hand, because the drain hole is big and most of the oil will come out in one big rush. Once that is draining, turn to the oil filter can, on the left side of the engine. Remove the cap by undoing the big hexagon bolt on the top. Don’t remove the filter yet. Next, locate the drain plug for the filter can – it’s on the bottom of the can, towards the front. It may have a hexagon head, or it may have a square head – either way, it’s usually all boogered up from people using pliers to remove it. Remove it, with a drain pan under the hole – this will allow the oil in the filter can to drain out. Now – go away and leave it alone. COIL AND SPARK PLUG CABLE CONSIDERATIONS The HI-4 ignition system is intended for use with Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. The HI-4 replaces the original equipment (OE) electronic ignition system on 1978 and later models as well as the points and mechanical advance on early models. The HI-4 offers switch selectable single and dual fire mode. The unit can initially be set to operate in dual fire mode with the OE coil. At a later time, the user can add a Crane single fire coil and switch the unit to single fire mode. In single fire mode, each cylinder is fired independently and only on the compression stroke. Single fire operation increases engine power at high RPM, improves starting, and reduces the likelihood of backfiring at low RPM. Coils used with the HI-4 must have at least 2 ohms primary resistance. Coils with 4 ohms or higher may be used, but may not produce optimum output. We recommend the following coils depending on application: Dual Fire. Use hookup shown in Figure 5. You can use the OE coil. However, the Crane 8-3006 coil will provide optimum performance and output. The Crane 83006 will fit all stock mounting locations. Single Fire With Single Plug Heads. Use hookup shown in Figure 6. Use Crane 8-3005 coil. This is a "Siamese" coil with two independent sections and will fit in the stock mounting location on most H-D® motorcycles. You can also use two dual spark tower coils and ground one of the towers on each coil to the engine case or frame. You will have to fabricate a bracket to mount the second coil.
