Pedestal Grinder A Pedestal Grinder is primarily used in Design & Technology for heavy general purpose grinding operations. Grinding is the process of removing material by the cutting action of the countless hard and sharp abrasive particles of a revolving grinding wheel as they come in contact with the surface to be ground. The grinding wheels are held between two flanged disks. Usually a roughing or coarse-grained wheel is mounted on one end of the spindle and a fine wheel on the other. A tool rest is provided for each wheel so that the work piece may be held or steadied while being ground. The operator is protected against flying abrasive particles and ground material by the wheel guards and spark arrestors, which are integral parts of a machine. Safety glass shields are also provided for additional protection. WARNING The main types of injury are caused by: • Entanglement of hair or clothing in rotating machinery parts. • Fingers being caught between grinder wheel and work rest. • Sparks or worn abrasive may be thrown by the grinding action. • Body parts coming into contact with abrasive wheel. • Ejected material or disintegrated abrasive wheel. • Hot metal. The building was named to honor two alumnae sisters, Catherine T. Murray ’34, M.Ed ’51 and the late Mary F. Murray ’33, and their commitment to education. Catherine T. Murray was on hand to dedicate the building and took part in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in the foyer (see photo below) along with her nephew Terry Murray and his wife Suzanne, as well as Rhode Island College President John Nazarian ’54 . Over 75 guests attended the ceremony and stayed to enjoy lunch in The Murray Center’s Kleniewski-Foley Hall of Fame Lobby located on the second floor. The Murray family was presented with a framed copy of the Rhode Island Legislative Acts, signed into law by Governor Donald Carcieri, and all guests received commemorative t-shirts and baseball caps. “The gift given by the Murray Family in naming the building is an integral part of our capital campaign fundraising goal of which 1.25 million will be committed to establishing a solid foun dation for an athletic endowment,” says Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation Donald E. PERFOMANCE BOOST The Freescale* MPXV4115V pressure sensor is the ideal part for automotive vacuum sensing needs such as those found in the brake booster application. Prepared by Marc Osajda Automotive Sensor Marketing Motorola – Toulouse, France Advanced braking systems are becoming increasingly common in today’s automobiles. Higher level systems and technology now being used in “brake assist systems” (BAS) in several European cars, have made it possible for more efficient and intelligent braking systems. A key functional application block found in these braking systems that has advanced with this technology surge, is the vacuum brake booster function. Here are a few driving factors behind the need and use of the brake booster, which helps ensure a safer braking system. Independent Systems: In current gasoline engine cars, the engine’s intake manifold generates the vacuum for the brake booster. This system works fine with one exception. The amount of vacuum in the brake booster is unknown by the braking system. Thus the amount of amplification is also unknown. If heavy braking is needed, there is no possibility for the brake system to interact with the intake manifold if additional amplification is required. The manufacturer’s interest for having the vacuum generated by an auxiliary vacuum pump is that the brake system can manage the amount of vacuum as required, on demand. This in turns gives it the ability to perform amplification on its own, giving it complete independent from the engine’s operating condition. The auxiliary pump is also able to provide higher amounts of vacuum whenever necessary. In situations calling for heavy braking, the pressure will naturally decrease in the brake booster, also causing a decrease in the amplification during braking. With an external pump it is possible to maintain, or even increase the amplification during a heavy braking phase. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times. Do not hold it against the stop. 8. Again start engine and turn steering wheel from stop to stop several times (avoid turning fully against stops as much as possible). Recheck fluid level and fill as required. If there is evidence of fluid foaming, turn off engine and wait an hour for foam to clear. If so, unplug the stoplight switch wires, remove the hairpin retainer, slide the switch off the pedal pin just far enough to permit removing the switch from the pin. Do not damage the switch. N OT E : Before beginning work, be sure vehicle is parked in a level area and that wheels are chocked to prevent unintentional movement. Read all of these instructions before attempting to install the HydroBoost unit. 2. Remove the nuts attaching the master cylinder to the Hydro-Boost unit.

Safety Recall No. 983 Brake Booster Vacuum Hose Models 2000-2001 (PL) Dodge and Plymouth Neon NOTE: This recall applies only to the above vehicles equipped with a: Ø 2.0L engine (“C” in the 8th VIN Position) built through March 21, 2001 (MDH 0321XX) or a Ø 2.0L High Output engine (“F” in the 8th VIN Position) built through April 11, 2001 (MDH 0411XX). IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer new vehicle inventory. Federal law requires you to stop sale and complete this recall service on these vehicles before retail delivery. Dealers should also consider this requirement to apply to used vehicle inventory and should perform this recall on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the DIAL VIP System. Subject The brake booster vacuum hose on about 350,000 of the above vehicles may swell due to oil contamination and become disconnected. A disconnected hose could cause a loss of power brake assist and an increase in engine idle speed. This can increase stopping distance and cause an accident without warning. But how does the pressure from your foot get to the wheels with enough force to stop a heavy vehicle? In the following sections, we will study the systems and components required to allow brakes to work effectively. Brake System Functions Automotive brakes are designed to slow and stop a vehicle by transforming kinetic (motion) energy into heat energy. As the brake linings contact the drums/rotors they create friction which produces the heat energy. The intensity of the heat is proportional to the vehicle speed, the weight of the vehicle, and the quickness of the stop. Faster speeds, heavier vehicles, and quicker stops equal more heat. Before installing the driveshaft, be sure the motor and Geareducer are on level bases and that their shafts are in reasonable alignment. Note match numbers on the driveshaft flanges and remove the yokes. Coat the motor shaft and Geareducer shaft with “Thred-Gard” (Crane Packing Co.) or similar lubricant. Place the key halfway in motor and Geareducer shafts, then install yokes as shown in Figure 4. Use a rubber mallet or wood block when tapping yokes to prevent damage. Tighten each yoke set screw against key. Align match numbers on tube and yoke flanges and bolt the tube and flange assembly to the Geareducer yoke while supporting the motor end of the tube and flange assembly. Progressively tighten bolts to 60 ft·lbƒ (82 N·m) torque. Slide the motor so that motor yoke can be bolted to the tube and flange assembly without pushing or pulling on the bushings. Align match numbers and bolt the motor yoke to the tube and flange assembly. Progressively tighten bolts to 60 ft·lbƒ (82 N·m) torque. The distance between tube and yoke flanges should be as shown in Figure 4.
