Steering, Suspension, and Driveline Basics (with How Lift ... - Meetup

Throughout this article I will address many basics of your vehicle’s steering, suspension, driveline, tires, and wheels. I did not intend this to be a “how to” manual with step by step instructions. It will simply illustrate the concepts. I’ll start with the lift and explain what it did to your steering, suspension, and driveline one aspect at a time. NOTES ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATIONS: 1) most are “spring under” leaf spring suspension, 2) non-pertinent parts are omitted for clarity, 3) many examples are exaggerated for illustration, and 4) most concepts illustrated also apply to spring over and coil/link suspensions. To cover the differences, I added a separate coil and link suspensions topic. Ready? OK, let’s get started. You lifted your Jeep and now it wanders all over the road and it vibrates too. What happened? Well, you just changed a lot of the vehicle’s geometry (probably without knowing it). Here’s a diagram of a stock Jeep and the proper angles. Your caster angle should be between 4 and 8 degrees positive. This caster angle creates an effect called mechanical trail. It’s the force that makes your wheels return to center. The caster angle shown below is close to stock. The point that the steering axis (black line) intersects the ground to the point to where the rotational axis touches the ground forms the points to measure your caster angle. You can best measure the caster angle from the top of the upper ball joint.

Low brake pedal, DTC stored in ECBM. Owners of a slew of 2009-13 GM cars and light trucks (complete application list below) may complain that their brake pedal feels very low or sinks to the floor on brake application. Upon scanning the brake system, you may find DTC C027B logged in the ECBM. One likely cause of the trouble, reports GM, is a small vacuum leak between the master cylinder and the brake booster. A missing or dislodged O-ring is the source of the leakage. The illustration at right shows a typical GM master cylinder/brake booster arrangement. The O-ring should fit over the raised area on the cylinder and into a small groove in the booster, as shown. So what causes the O-ring to dislodge or go missing? Removing the master cylinder without pumping the brake pedal several times to exhaust the vacuum in the booster. This typically occurs, says GM, when the cylinder is disconnected and moved aside to get to another component for repair. Repositioning or installing a new O-ring should eliminate the vacuum leak and subsequent pedal issues. Child Safety Protect your child by installing a child seat engineered to survive crash forces. Unlike your arms, it’s the safest method available for child protection in a car accident. 2012 ACADIA/ACADIA DENALI We have tried to make this brochure as comprehensive as possible. As some information may have been updated since the time of printing, please check with your GM dealer for complete details. FIND THE RIGHT SEAT • Use an infant-only seat for infants up to 14 kg. Keep it rear-facing and semi-reclined. Be sure the harness comes from slots at or below the baby’s shoulders and is snug when buckled. • Use your convertible child seat in a forward-facing and upright position for toddlers and children between 14 and 30 kg. Be sure the harness straps are coming from above the child’s shoulders. • For children between 30 and 45 kg use a belt-positioning-booster seat. • Children over 46 kg must pass the safety-belt-fit criteria before wearing a normal car safety belt. • Knees should bend naturally at the edge of the seat. • The lap belt should sit low on the hips. • The shoulder part of the seatbelt should rest on the shoulder or collarbone. • The child should be able to maintain this position for the length of your trip. NEVER DO THIS ALWAYS DO THIS ALWAYS REMEMBER • Place all children under 13 in a back seat. • Never place a rear-facing child seat in front of an airbag. • Use a child seat for all children until they can safely wear the adult seatbelt. • Be sure you have one seatbelt for every person. • NEVER place the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back. • Be sure all child seats are locked into the car using the LATCH system or the seatbelt.
